approachable & affirming fitness
I started working as a personal trainer in 2017. I came to personal training because of my own experiences with all the ways that exercise and moving my body could make my life better. Through movement, I’d learned tools to help manage chronic pain, move through emotions, inhabit my body on my own terms as a trans person, and have the thrill of doing things I didn’t think I could do. But even though I learned to love working out, I also knew a lot of people who avoided the gym because fitness culture is trash.
Since then, I’ve worked with hundreds of people to find approaches to movement that are realistic and supportive for their lives. I don’t offer 6-week transformations or make big promises about how your body will change. Instead, I accompany folks as they get to know their bodies, expand their sense of what they’re capable of, and – in many cases – build the most consistent movement practice they’ve ever had.
Most people I work with are queer or trans; community organizers or leaders in liberation struggles; folks in larger bodies who don’t want to deal with fatphobia or focus on weight loss; and/or people in eating disorder recovery. Many of my clients deal with chronic pain or injury histories.
Small groups & classes
I teach a weekly drop-in fitness class that’s open to anyone:
Tuesdays, 12-12:45 pm
$12-30, sliding scale
Hardshell Fitness – 1849 E. 38th St., Mpls
Feel free to just show up, or get in touch if you want to check in before your first class.
I also coach a few closed small group training sessions. These are groups of 5-8 people who commit to a weekly workout at a standing time. If you’re interested, reach out and I’ll let you know if I have openings in any groups.
1-on-1 coaching
My 1-on-1 fitness practice is currently full. Feel free to reach out about personal training, but it’s likely that I’ll recommend either small group work, or one of my trusted local trainer comrades.
Pricing
1-1 and small group training sessions are priced on a sliding scale. Sliding scale pricing relies on everyone paying at the level they can actually afford - which means folks with more money pay more, so that folks with less can pay less.
How to use the sliding scale: Find your annual income in the table below – next to it is your suggested price for a single session. This is a suggested rate: I won’t ask you for proof of income, and I trust that you’ll pick the right price for your specific situation.
Annual income $ per session
Under $30,000 $60
$31 - 45,000 $70
$46 - 60,000 $80
$61 - 80,000 $95
$81 - 100,000 $120
Above $100,000 $135+
*Prices are for a 55-minute session. If you work in a pair or small group, you’ll pay less per session.
If the low end of the scale is not possible for you, let’s talk. I can often work something out, esp. for Black people, people of color & indigenous people, trans people, single parents, & disabled people.
If you’re at the top of the scale, consider paying more than $135/session. For example, my hope is that someone who makes $200k will pay more than someone who makes $100k. Please also think about paying more if you have other kinds of privilege (like you have inherited wealth, own a home, are white, are a citizen, etc.). This makes it possible for me to offer free or low-cost sessions for folks with less cash.
